A Music

A Music

by Wendell Berry

I employ the blind mandolin player
in the the tunnel of the Metro. I pay him
a coin as hard as his notes,
and maybe he has employed me, and pays me
with his playing to hear him play.

Maybe we're necessary to each other,
and this vacant place has need of us both
--it's vacant, I mean, of dwellers,
is populated by passages and absences.

By some fate or knack he has chosen
to place his music in this cavity
where there's nothing to look at
and blindness costs him nothing.
Nothing was here before he came.

His music goes out among the sounds
of footsteps passing. The tunnel is the resonance
and meaning of what he plays.
It's his music, not the place, I go by.

In this light which is just a fact, like darkness
or the edge or end of what you may be
going toward, he turns his cap up on his knees
and leaves it there to ask and wait, and holds up
his mandolin, the lantern of his world;

his fingers make their pattern on the wires.
This is not the pursuing of rhythm
of a blind cane pecking in the sun,
but is a singing in a dark place.

B-Side Reflection

Katie Herzig

I love the Creative Process. I also love b-sides.

I spent today looking through past shoots I've had. Along with finding a hand full of overlooked b-sides images, I thought through each shoot, reflecting on what I did and what I would do differently now. How did I edit the images at that time? What was the day like, and how did I interact with my clients?

Time of reflection is a very important stage in the creative process. It promotes growth and maturity, as well as challanges "the self" to reach further than you had in the past.

Here are a few of those b-sides:

Rain, Rain

It's been raining all day. It's kind of wonderful.

I spent most of the day sending e-mails, reading through the latest issue of Garden and Gun, planning for my new site (shhh...), and preparing for ArtWalk.

Rainy days make me want to listen to music. Music like this:

She & Him

I am in love with this album.

A few months ago, whilst skimming through the blogs-o-the-day, I came across THIS entry from a music reviewer a highly respect (shout out Heather). Needless to say the concept of Zoey Deschanel and M. Ward combining forces intrigued me.

So, I waited for the album.

Now, I have it.

It is very solid.

The album begins with Zoey's powerful 50's voice heaving the heavy lyrics of "Sentimental Heart" into your, now sentimentalised, heart. Her rough yet crooning vocals are accompanied by a solo piano, but just wait until 2:05 when Zooey is joined by strings, four part harmony, and full band.

And that's just track 1.

After listening to the album in it's entirety (how many times was it Laura...7 in a row), I'm convinced I can recommend it to you guys.

Also, I need to buy it on vinyl. It's full, it feels old, and I would love to have the 12" Artwork.

Grey Haven

So last night I was able to satisfy a long standing desire of mine: get back into performing music.

In high school I sang in a classic-mediocre-fivepiece-local-band....it was so much fun.

Jump to the present time. Over the last month and a half I've played a part in starting a music community called Grey Haven. The idea of what exactly Grey Haven is is still a little up in the air. But, the general overtone sounds something like this: Musicians playing music together.

Pretty simple. Musician who are independent, musicians who are in bands, musician who have a singular idea for a song, all come together and help each other create/record/perform these songs.

So last night, Grey Haven made is debut at Workplay to 85 listeners.

The results are as follows:
